Today Edmonton launched Earth week celebrations with a great community organized event in my area. Local league members volunteered and set up a really cool trade fair kind of environment with almost 50 different booths and presenters at our local community hall in Beacon Heights!
There were people there trading seeds, learning about solar power, riding bikes to generate electricity for live music, and making eco friendly toys and crafts with kids. We were eating local food, discovering indoor composting and rain barrels (my table), got a sneak peek at this years farmers markets and had plenty of interactive exhibits to keep busy with.
The place was buzzing ALL DAY, every news station had camera crews there and the place was packed with families, community members, and not surprisingly just about every local politician from municipal up to federal showed up. Most of them actually came to enjoy the event and participate, and our local favourite MLA candidate Deron Bilous volunteered for the whole event! City Councilman Tony Caterina donated a Bokashi indoor composter to the raffle draw as well!
There was a collection point for supplies, toys, crafts, and reusable items that were sorted and sent off to local schools, community groups and charities. We had some heavy hitters from the solar energy community there with Off the Grid Renewable Energy Systems as well as the Solar Energy Society of Alberta. There was even a table of bug parts, showing kids about nature. Plenty of natural hemp products, hand made organic fibre clothing, and a bike repair workshop rounded out the event. Something for everyone and entertainment ongoing the whole day. The community sports guys even brought a mascot! Habitat for humanity sent a booth for their re-store, and there was green renovations people nearby as well. I ate myself nearly to death on Koubassa burgers from the best local deli in this part of town, and had the tastiest ice cream ever.
This is how community involvement begins. This event was VERY well organized and executed, had the support of the locals as well as the city of Edmonton, and really brought a diverse bunch together to amuse and educate all different kinds of visitors. Save money, eat local, reduce pollution, get active, or just have a yummy ice cream and get your face painted.
These events are a great way to explore new opportunities in your city that otherwise might not occur to people. We need to advertise to ourselves more!
I hope this is a rejuvenation for this community league, Beacon Heights is very well situated to be a vibrant, diverse, green community with a variety of wonderful options for local involvement at all levels.
If you ever see signs up, or ads for local events in Edmonton I suggest you check them out! This city really shines when it comes to local events of all kinds. I love getting excited, this event could have sucked but it turned out to be absolutely fantastic. Better organized than the last half dozen eco related trade shows I’ve attended and fun for everyone!
Way to go Beacon Heights!
